Sarasota Bid for World Rowing Championship
Focus of April Sports Speaking Event
Suncoast leader to share steps, progress in securing 2017 rowing championship
SARASOTA, Fla. (April 16, 2013) – Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Association (SANCA), Chief Operating Officer Paul Blackketter, along with supporting Sarasota County leaders, will share the latest steps taken to secure the local bid for the 2017 World Rowing Championship and provide a status update on the Nathan Benderson Park development at the Sarasota Area Sports Alliance’s next “Sports Spotlight” event on April 30.
Leader of Sarasota’s bid for the championship event, Blackketter said the process is proceeding on track and that Sarasota has everything in place to secure the winning bid from the International Federation of Rowing Association.
“Sarasota has a great shot at securing this championship,” said Blackketter, COO of Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center. “This will be nothing short of spectacular attracting tens of thousands of people to our area and changing the national reach of the center.”
Sarasota and Manatee counties have recognized rowing as a way of expanding the local economy and attracting new tourist dollars, noted the Sarasota County Sports Commission, which is supporting the initiative to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships.
“The championships are expected to attract 42,000 attendees, with more than 1,200 athletes from 62 nations and about 975 coaches and officials. The projected economic impact is about $25 million of untapped sports related revenue to our local economy,” said Nicole Rissler, director of sports for the Sarasota County Sports Commission.
The event is being sponsored by Sarasota Orthopedic Associates and will begin at 5:30 pm Tuesday, April 30,at Nathan Benderson Park, 2500 N. Honore Ave., Sarasota.

The admission fee is $15. Entry includes complimentary appetizers and one beverage for guests.
All proceeds benefit and further the mission of the Sarasota Area Sports Alliance which includes offering college scholarships.
