Nomen Azeem, MD - First in Sarasota/Manatee Counties to use St. Jude Medical BurstDR stimulation supporting patients with chronic pain

Sarasota, FL, October 26, 2016 – Nomen Azeem, MD of Sarasota Orthopedic Associates is the first physician in Sarasota and Manatee Counties to use BurstDR™ stimulation from St. Jude Medical to support the treatment of patients suffering from chronic pain. According to Dr Azeem, "BurstDR stimulation is a new, superior spinal cord stimulation option for patients that has been shown to provide less pain, less suffering, and less therapy maintenance."

BurstDR stimulation, exclusive to St. Jude Medical, is designed to help patients find relief from pain and suffering while providing a better experience with chronic pain therapy. The device also helps physicians address their patients' physical and emotional responses to pain. Additionally, BurstDR stimulation assists the physician in reducing paresthesia, a light tingling sensation sometimes experienced with traditional spinal cord stimulation.

According to Nomen Azeem M.D., Interventional Pain Management Specialist, "the ability of BurstDR stimulation to provide patients a more complete therapy experience is one of the key reasons Sarasota Orthopedic Associates was quick to adopt the therapy and offer it to our patients."

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy can transform quality of life for many people who are otherwise unable to find relief from chronic pain. However, BurstDR stimulation has been clinically proven to improve upon traditional SCS by generating superior pain relief. St. Jude Medical's proprietary BurstDR stimulation works differently from other stimulation designs, utilizing intermittent "burst" pulses designed to mimic the body's natural nerve impulse patterns. The goal of the therapy is to empower physicians in providing patients a new therapy option to improve outcomes and help patients secure relief from chronic pain.

Chronic pain is a complex and challenging condition for physicians to manage and a heavy burden for patients who find their lives profoundly limited by their pain. Many patients often move from treatment option to treatment option seeking pain relief, only to find a partial or incomplete response to therapy.

Nomen Azeem, MD is one of twelve physicians at Sarasota Orthopedic Associates. The group has four locations (Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Venice, and Bradenton) and offers same day appointments when needed. Appointments are available through the website www.SOA.md or by calling 941-951-2663. The commitment of Sarasota Orthopedic Associates is to get our patients back on their feet, back to work, back in the game, and back to life. For more information contact SWall@soa.md.

FL Gulf Coast Physician First to Use New Chronic Pain Management Treatment

Interventional Pain Specialist, Dr. Nomen Azeem of Sarasota Orthopedic Associates, is the first physician on the Gulf Coast of Florida to use and implant a new neurostimulation device designed to provide pain relief in patients suffering from chronic intractable pain. The device, known as the St. Jude Medical Axium™ Neurostimulator System for dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation, was used to treat a 33-year-old patient suffering from chronic foot and ankle pain dating back to 2010. She underwent a total of 5 arthroscopic surgeries, physical therapy, and medications, all without relief. During her trial period in which the device is used temporarily to assess effectiveness in pain relief, she reported 100% pain relief for the first time in 7 years and was able to walk 2.5 miles without pain. Dr. Azeem then permanently implanted the St. Jude Medical Axium system.

Unlike traditional neurostimulation devices, the St. Jude Medical Axium system targets the DRG, a spinal structure densely populated with nerves that transmit information to the brain via the spinal cord. This first-of-its-kind device can target specific areas of the body otherwise underserved by traditional SCS such as the groin, hip, knee, and ankle/foot.

“As an interventional pain physician, I witness the debilitating physical and psychological effects of chronic pain which impact quality of life. All pain physicians worry about long term systemic effects of pain medications. Fortunately, the technological advances being made in the field of neuromodulation are astounding and have revolutionized how we think about treating neuropathic pain,” said Dr. Azeem, “We can now offer a device that, with advanced technology, allows the ability to block pain in very localized areas after injury or surgery. In the appropriate patient, we may be able to decrease the amount of pain medication necessary to control pain symptoms and even allow some to discontinue pain medications altogether.”

According to the Institute of Medicine, chronic pain affects more than 100 million Americans, an incidence rate which outpaces heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined. Research suggests that, in total, the condition costs the American population an estimated 515 million workdays annually and generates upwards of 40 million visits to physicians each year.

Sarasota Orthopedic Associates has four convenient locations in Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Venice, and Bradenton. We treat patients of all ages and offer same day appointments when needed. Appointments are made by calling 941-951-2663 or, by logging onto our website at www.SOA.md. Our commitment is to get our patients back on their feet, back to work, back in the game, and back to life.

Over-the Counter Medications for Osteoarthritis: Are They All the Same?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease of the joints that damages the bone and cartilage. It usually worsens over time and can cause pain and stiffness in your joints. OA is very common, and the change you might get it increases with age.

More than 80% of adults in the United States will have OA by age 80.

How Can I best Treat my OA?

OA can be treated with medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are examples of commonly used over-the-counter (OTC) NSAIDs. Because of the different ways in which each of these drugs work, you should think about possible side effects before choosing an OTC NSAID.

What Are the Possible Side Effects from NSAIDs?

NSAIDs can cause heart, stomach, or kidney problems. Intere3stingly, because of the way they work, an NSAID such as naproxen, which has a lower risk of causing heart problems, can have a higher risk of stomach problems such as irritation or ulcer. Similarly, the OTC NSAID ibuprofen and prescription NSAIDs such as diclofenac have a lower risk of causing stomach problems but a higher risk of causing heart problems such as heart attack.

How Do I Choose the Right NSAID for Me?

Based on guidelines written for rheumatologists – the bone and joint doctors – you should consider these factors.

  • Are you over age 75?
  • Do you have kidney problems?
  • Do you have a history of stomach irritation or ulcer?
  • Do you have a history of heart problems or high blood pressure?
  • Do you take low-dose aspirin?

I have a History of Stomach Problems – Which NSAID Is Best?

Certain factors, such as older age and the use of high doses of NSAIDs, can increase the possibility that you will get stomach problems when taking your NSAID. Taking low-dose aspirin will also increase your risk for stomach problem. Medical studies have shown that the NSAID ibuprofen is preferred if you are worried about getting stomach problems.

I have a History of Heart Problems – Which NSAID Is Best?

If you have heart problems, including high blood pressure or a prior heart attack, medical studies show that diclofenac and ibuprofen can increase your risk of heart problems and should be avoided. If an NSAID is needed, naproxen appears to be the safest one to use. Also, if you take a low-dose aspirin for your heart health, the US Food and Drug Administration says that you should avoid ibuprofen. If you need to take an NSAID for your OA, it is best to take your aspirin at least two hours before the NSAID.

I have a History of Kidney Problems – Which NSAID Is Best?

If you have serious kidney disease (chronic kidney disease, stage 4 or 5) you should not take an NSAID. If you have more mild disease (chronic kidney disease, stage 3), you should discuss whether you can take an NSAID with your doctor. The risk of developing a kidney problem on a NSAID is higher if you are taking certain heart medicines, such as a diuretic, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, or an angiotensin-receptor blocker.

NSAIDs are good medicine for OA, but it’s important to choose the drug that’s best for you

Sarasota Orthopedic Associates Deploys IDS Patient Survey Technology

Fort Lauderdale, FL – Sarasota Orthopedic Associates (SOA) has implemented a data gathering and analytics tool, as part of its quality initiative designed to improve knowledge of patient expectations and monitoring of SOA's service and care.

The technology, developed by IDS, a pioneer in healthcare IT, offers an all-in-one survey process for data collection, data compilation and real-time reporting. The patient satisfaction survey is the latest healthcare application developed by IDS and joins the company's suite of AbbaDox clinical reporting and workflow solutions in the cloud.

Although SOA did gather patient feedback previously, the manual process was "slow, labor-intensive and not technically sound," said CEO Doug Badertscher. "This really is a game changer. It allows us to identify processes that may not meet customer expectations. It also helps us understand what factors patients find important when defining quality in care and rating their overall experience." Read More »

Dr. Jeffery Silverstein and Dr. Andrew Moulton’s Philosophy on Wellness and Aging. (Article published: August 2013 SRQ Magazine)

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY ON WELLNESS AND AGING? SILVERSTEIN: From an orthopedic standpoint, we treat the body and the mind in one. We put a lot of emphasis on both prevention and treatment of the body through therapy and muscle balance. Essentially, we try to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle through diet, exercise and staying active. When someone breaks a hip, they tend to become less physically active, so we then employ physical therapy. The same thing applies to arthritis of the knee; we encourage low-impact exercise—biking, swimming, running, rowing, and elliptical machines to increase mobility, flexibility and the health of the joints. MOULTON: I specialize in the spine, but my philosophy takes the whole person into consideration, because the spine affects everything from your skull down to your pelvis—you can get headaches, neck pain, back pain, arm pain, leg pain—all kinds of potential problems. I really have to look at wellness from head to toe when evaluating a patient. A big concern for many people as they age is preventing dowager’s hump, a condition which is often a result of osteoporosis. Maintaining good bone health is important, as it can help minimize the risk of osteoporosis, beginning with the front line of care. SILVERSTEIN: Women are at a higher risk than men for developing osteoporosis, and approximately 50% of women are diagnosed with some form of osteoporosis following menopause. For this reason, we recommend getting Dexa screenings every couple of years, as well as managing modifiable risk factors, such as excessive alcohol, caffeine, chronic steroids, and malnutrition. In addition, women can utilize hormone replacement therapy and bisphosphonates to help reduce the risk of fractures. These are all good things to consider as you get older if you’re concerned about osteoporosis or simply want to maintain healthier bones. MOULTON: Vitamin D is crucial because it facilitates the transport of calcium into the bones and helps preserve bone mass. We find that when people aren’t active and don’t have a diet that includes enough green leafy vegetables, dairy products, or natural vitamin D supplements, they can develop vitamin D deficiency. We recommend at least 1200 mg of calcium and up to 800 mg of vitamin D per day, which can help prevent bone loss.

“At SOA, we focus on the patient as a whole and treat everything from the psychology of chronic pain to specific extremity concerns and bone and joint issues.”

Sarasota Orthopedic Associates (SOA) has served the community for more than 30 years and is one of the most highly respected orthopedic groups in Florida. This group of esteemed physicians is sought out for their medical and technical expertise. Business leaders today must understand that "quality and excellence” are key words used often and by many organizations to define their particular services being delivered by their organizations. The physician owners and management at SOA have gone to great lengths to develop a mission statement and culture that mandate that all patient care given is done so in a manner that has been established to exceed patient expectations. This level of care is not only set as a mission and culture but also monitored in multiple ways throughout the entire organization on a regular basis and effective training and change is implemented when and where needed. SOA’s commitment is to get their patients back on their feet…back in the game…and back to life.

In praise of new doctor in town, a spinal specialist

There is a new doctor in town!

The new doctor's name is Dr. Andrew Moulton. He is a spinal specialist with Sarasota Orthopedic Associates, located at two locations, one in Lakewood Ranch and one on Bahia Vista in Sarasota.

He is also the founder of the Butterfly Foundation for which he travels to different countries and donates his time doing surgeries on children with spinal deformities. (Google www.butterflyfoundation.com).

He just transferred from New York and I have been so blessed to have this amazing doctor fall into our lap.

My 17-year-old daughter has suffered for four years with constant back and leg pain, robbing her of her childhood. Dr. Moulton operated on my daughter on Feb. 26. He fused her L4, L5, S1.

Well, I am thrilled beyond my wildest expectations. Victoria is now pain free and she still has a few months of recovery.

I have taken my daughter to countless doctors, chiropractors, and had spinal injections, traction and physical therapy for years, sadly with little relief. I searched and searched for a doctor but being her age there was not really one doctor who wanted to lay his hands on her.

I have had spinal surgery myself, and I wish that I had the outcome that my daughter has had with Dr. Moulton. It is not very often that you hear of someone rave or recommend a doctor nowadays. Well, I am!

If you are in need of a spinal doctor, I highly recommend Dr. Moulton.
